THERE is no crisis of confidence in the Clarets camp despite the current run of just two points and two goals in the last five league games.

That was the promise from assistant manager Sam Ellis just before the squad boarded a coach to travel down to Watford for tonight's crucial first division clash.

"You can never tell till the players go out on to the pitch but we think that there is still plenty of confidence here," he said.

"We are sure there is no problem with it despite the current run we are on."

And with high profile and big spending clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester United and currently Leeds all suffering dips in form, Ellis insists that a bad spell is something that every team goes through at some point in the season.

"Everybody goes through bad patches when things don't quite go for them and we are having that at the moment," he said.

"Of course it is better not to have a bad run.

"It is a test of character for everyone but we feel that we will soon come through it."

Key to getting back to winning ways will be a return to the free-scoring form from the first half of the season.

"It would be nice to get an early goal but to be honest any sort of goal will do us just now," said Ellis.

Ian Moore's consolation strike against Manchester City and Gareth Taylor's penalty against Sheffield Wednesday are the only goals to have been scored during the current poor run in the league.

"We still feel we have got enough about the team to beat anybody on our day.

"People were surprised when we were at the top but to be honest, we were surprised they were surprised.

"The fact is we feel we have got good players here."

After the woeful displays against Sheffield Wednesday and Cheltenham Town manager Stan Ternent and his number two could at least take heart from display against West Brom after the interval.

Ellis said: "We got hold of the ball better in the second half and showed a bit of character.

"In fact we felt we were a bit unlucky not to have scored.

"But to turn things around we need to show some spirit and we need a bit of luck.

"We don't think that things have gone our way of late but we are not going to make excuses.

"We were nearly there in the second half on Sunday and we have got to work hard to put things right.

"Often you find that hard work changes luck and we will just get on with it."

It was December 15 when the Clarets last collected three points with the 3-2 home defeat of Stockport County.

Tonight would be a great time to get back to winning ways and remind the rest of the sides at the top of the table that Burnley have not peaked too soon. LAST LEAGUE GOAL: Striker Gareth Taylor's penalty against Sheffield Wednesday on January 19 was the last time the Clarets found the back of the net in Division One
