AN inquest has been opened into a retired sheet metalworker from Bury who may have died as a result of working close to asbestos.
Harold Edmond Longworth (82), of Laurel Street, had been exposed to the material during his working life, and although it was suspected he suffered from the asbestos-related disease mesothelioma, it was never formally diagnosed.
Bury District Coroner Mr Barrie Williams was told that Bury-born Mr Longworth had begun to suffer from suspected mesothelioma in early 2001. However, he made clear his wishes, which were supported by his family, not to undertake further tests for a full diagnosis.
He suddenly deteriorated only five days before his death at Fairfield General Hospital on January 25, the hearing was told.
Evidence of identification was provided by his daughter Mrs Marianne Crossley, of Whitburn Drive, Bury.
A post-mortem has been carried out and the coroner adjourned the hearing pending the outcome of further tests to establish whether asbestos had contributed in any way to Mr Longworth's death.
