HIGHWAYS chiefs are making their mark in a bid to bring about the demise of the daily school run.
As part of Bury Council's "Safer Routes to Schools" programme, street markings are to be introduced outside 30 schools in Radcliffe, Bury, Tottington and Ramsbottom.
The aim is to encourage parents to accompany their children to school on foot, by making streets safer.
Much of the work will be carried out before the end of March, with any objections to be received by February 22.
Parking will also be prohibited outside schools in the south of the borough, where a second round of road markings are to be introduced next year.
Transport services manager Peter Schofield said: "What we are trying to do is to resolve a safety issue in the areas around the schools.
"They really can be very busy, with parked cars, children trying to cross in between them, and moving cars on the road.
"There is not a history of accidents outside schools in Bury, but there is a perceived risk that it is dangerous, which discourages parents from walking children to school."
