CRIME battered Bury businesses are being urged to set up a smoke screen to protect their premises.
The new security system which fills a room with impenetrable smoke when activated was being demonstrated by police in the town yesterday (Thurs Feb 7).
Local traders could receive financial help to install the anti-crime measure, as well as CCTV systems, thanks to a £10,000 cash pot. The money has been made available from Bury's Single Regeneration Budget fund.
Under the Business Security Initiative, owners of small shops, such as off-licences, can apply for cash grants, up to a maximum of £2,500, to pay half of the cost of new security devices.
PC Andy Wright, Bury's Crime Reduction Advisor, said: "Off-licences in particular are being battered by criminals at the moment. This new fund will allow small business bosses to apply for 50 per cent of the cost of buying and installing a host of devices that will protect their properties in the future.
"One of those systems is the new Smoke Screen which engulfs a shop with thick smoke in a matter of seconds. You can't steal what you can't see."
