TWO more high-rise flats in Preston could be set for demolition.
Housing firm Avenquest Homes has applied to Preston Borough Council for permission to tear down two tower blocks in Avenham.
And the firm, part of the Collingwood Housing Association, has received widespread support from the residents of the buildings -- York House and Lancaster House, Oxford Road, pictured above.
However, council procedures mean that a decision will not be made for another two months.
Richard Lister, AvenQuest homes manager said: "In a situation such as this it is important that any action has the majority support of the residents."
Faults in the original design of the 1960s-built towers are being blamed for the need to demolish the buildings -- homes for around 150 people.
Richard Lister said: "The two tower blocks which were built in the 1960's have inherent problems, in particular the communal areas are poorly designed offering little space and security could be compromised."
Along with the two tower blocks, a group of four, four storey flats on nearby Queen Street are set for demolition.
But residents of two nearby blocks, on Ashworth Street and Richmond Street, voted against losing their home, and have been granted permission to stay.
Anybody leaving their homes will be offered £1,500 home loss payment, removal costs and £300 for any extra costs.
Steps will also be taken to make sure that friends can stay together, by re-housing them as neighbours.
If the AvenQuest application is successful demolition will begin in around two years due to the numbers that will need to be re-housed.
