DOUGLAS Boyd, the Camerata's Principal Conductor and Artistic Director, has brought a diverting and entertaining oboe repertoire to the orchestra.

We were treated to a masterly and exciting performance, by Boyd, of Mozart's 'Oboe Concerto in C Major'.

He was practically dancing as his wonderfully mellifluous sounds filled to auditorium. There were times when it seemed that he was breathing through his ears, so sustained and fluid was his playing.

The concert opened with Arcangelo Corelli's 'Concerto Grosso in F major opus 6 No 2'. Corelli wrote 12 Concerto Grosso as his opus 6 and two extracts from this 2nd Concerto were taken by Sir Michael Tippett as a starting point for his 'Fantasia Concertante' on a theme of Corelli,.

The first half of the concert featured this fantasia, which, because of the close proximity in the programming, allowed Boyd and the orchestra to illustrate how the themes were used in the variations, signposting the way Tippett updated Corelli's music into the 20th Century, creating rich and sensuous textures.

For me the final piece, Mozart's Symphony No 41 in C Major 'The Jupiter', spoke volumes. With its charm undiminished, this music has cascaded down the centuries, timeless and magical.
