2002 and still counting -- that is the total number of rugby matches played by the seniors of the King Edward and Queen Mary School lst XV.

In seven seasons of school matches the doughty dozen have clocked up around 1,400 victories between them and have toured to destinations as far flung as Cork, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Newcastle and London.

A converted try by Lancashire county cap Andrew Marshall and three penalties from Chris Pickles took Tom Eastham's side to a hard-fought 14-8 victory over Ormskirk Grammar School in their final home match of a season of 11 wins.

Eastham paid tribute to the quality and commitment of the coaching and ground staff which he and his players have enjoyed. "It's been a great privilege to play on such superb pitches," he said, "and to have such supportive coaches. It's been a first-class experience for all of us."

The ultimate challenge still awaits the Lytham boys who will travel to New Zealand in July for a seven-game tour after a warm up match in Los Angeles.
