Hull Dockers 12, Leigh East 10 NATIONAL Conference big guns Leigh East were shot down by Division One side Hull Dockers in the second round of the GMB National Cup.
East gave Sheffield Eagles a tough time the previous week and they started where they left off by racing into a 10-0 lead.
Full-back Mark Kay opened the scoring with a fourth minute try when he linked up from a scrum and raced 60 metres for a try that John Woods goaled.
Another good moved ended with Danny Kilshaw crossing, only for the try to be disallowed but then, in the 25th minute, Lee Penkywicz crossed in the corner off a John Gunning pass.
But in the second half Dockers' changed their tactics and threw everything at the East defence. Rob Bowdler and John Taylor tackled superbly, the defence breaking just once in the 72nd minute when stand-off Chris Stephenson went in for a six-pointer to add to two penalties to level the tie.
Despite the efforts of man of the match Gary Fletcher, East failed to put their limited possession to good use and as extra time beckoned Stephenson settled the issue with his fourth goal before breathing a huge sigh of relief when a last-minute penalty effort from Woods drifted across the face of the posts.
