Ideal Isberg 25, Leigh Miners 28: LEIGH Miners Rangers finally ended their away day blues - thanks to powerful young centre Richard Varkulis.

The victory on Humberside - their first away from Twist Lane since last September - keeps the Miners in the top five of the National Conference Premier Division but six points behind leaders West Hull who also have four games in hand.

After storming into a 10-0 lead the Miners found themselves involved in a see-saw game that finally swung the Miners' way with three tries in the final 10 minutes.

The tension also got to the players with Ideal's influential play-maker Paul Wardell and Miners strong running second row Steve Flannery both red carded after a a 62nd minute punch up.

Without Wardell Ideal floundered and the Miners used the extra space to devastating effect.

It was a much-changed Miners side who took the early initiative with creative Aussie stand-off Craig Wilson putting half-back partner Seam Phoenix in for a fourth minute try he goaled himself. On the half hour Simon Hartley charged over for a second Leigh try and a 10-0 lead.

But Ideal struck back and cut the lead to 10-8 at half time. Winger Danny Ulyatt crosssed for a quick-fire hat-trick, two just before the break and third six minutes into the second period. It looked curtains for the Miners when Wardell sent Spence in for another after 49 minutes to give Ideal a 20-10 lead.

The irrepressible Lee Lomax pulled a try back before Terry Smirk knocked over a field goal and then a penalty to increase the Humbersiders' advantage.

But Varkulis had other ideas. He blasted in for one try in the 70th minute to set up a rousing finale. Five minutes later he was in again, capitalising on a Ideal error. Hartley's conversion gave Leigh a one-point lead before a last minute touchdown from full-back Matt Irwin cemented victory.
