BURY Carnival is to be staged over two days this year in an historic break with tradition.

For the first time, the town's premier annual event will be held over a full weekend.

The Bury Times Group-organised Bury Carnival Gala Weekend will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9.

And this year also sees a switch in venue. The hard-standing Goshen playing fields on Manchester Road will host the two-day gala which in 2001 was held at Chesham Fields.

The historic decision to extend Bury Carnival marks another significant chapter for the popular event.

Previously, Bury Lions had organised the carnival. But the club was forced to scrap the event in 2000 after 30 years. But last year, the Bury Times Group stepped in to revive the gala, with the Lions acting in an advisory capacity.

Cash raised from this year's two-day bumper event will be distributed by Bury Lions to assist charities and other good causes.

Bury Times Group events manager Julie Wheeler said: "Last year, thousands of people attended the carnival.

"And, for that reason, we felt the event warranted a second day. The feedback so far has been brilliant."

Showmen from as far away as Ireland and Scotland have inundated Julie with inquiries about participating in this year's two-day event.

As usual, there will be a host of stalls and sideshows, plus two arenas at Goshen to cater for acts and guest appearances.

Attractions already lined up include the West Lancs Dogs Display Team, a large funfair, and American wrestling. The Army and police will also be represented.

Charity stalls can pay £50 and will be VAT exempt if they want to set up on the field. Security will also be provided throughout the weekend. Admission to visitors will be free.

Julie added: "The interest shown so far has been fantastic and there are no doubts whatsoever that Bury Carnival can be sustained over two days."
