MOST of the coverage about speeding tickets and cameras implies that the driving public has a right to speed and that it's rotten luck to get caught and fined!
This seems an irresponsible approach when you consider that speeding takes lives. Lancashire Police, for example, are one of the leading forces tackling the problem of speeding. Their camera enforcement programme will contribute significantly to reducing speed-related injuries and deaths. They're not handing out speeding offences for the sake of it; they're using an automated system which does not tie up valuable police time and is an efficient way to educate drivers with informative road safety literature.
The Lancashire Police are taking encouraging steps to reduce a problem that directly affects us all. It is a shame that coverage in many newspapers does not reflect and support these positive initiatives.
