IF only Nelson had put away some of their first half chances then surely they would have gained some reward from this evenly balanced NWCL Second Division game at Brows Lane.
Livewire Mick Molyneux twice drew the Formby keeper out of position, but each time saw his attempted lobs driver over the unguarded goal in the strong wind.
And Stuart Mulligan wasted Nelson's best chance of the half when he shot wide from six yards following a great built-up.
The game swung Formby's way after 63 minutes when the home side broke from midfield following a Nelson mistake and despite a desperate tackle by Dave Channon, Neil Smith gave his side the lead with an unstoppable 25 yard shot.
Channon was then sent off by the referee for the tackle which was his second yellow card of the game and Formby struck again five minutes later as Nelson struggled to adjust.
Smith slipped through the Blues defence to score his second goal with a low shot.
Nelson rallied, especially after the introduction of player-manager John Bailey from the subs bench and hit back with a Mick Bartholomew goal on 89 minutes. Alas it was too little too late.
