ROSSENDALE Chartists met with Janet Anderson MP to raise concerns about the current management of Rossendale Council.
Alan Johnson, recently-elected chairman of the Chartists, said: "We seem to be between the devil and the deep blue see when it comes to pursuing justified complaints.
"We can complain to the Ombudsman at no cost, but only if the complaint relates to a personal injustice we cannot complain, for instance, if the Council's actions are damaging the environment.
"In any event the Ombudsman's findings are not enforceable. The Council can simply refuse to accept the findings.
"Or we can complain through the courts but this is very expensive and even people eligible for legal aid can face some costs. Also, a court complaint cannot be made on behalf of a residents' association and this can be a strong deterrent.
"Who wants to be the one to put their head above the parapet? There are simply too many blocks and barriers."
Janet Anderson has promised to raise the concerns with Stephen Byers, secretary of state for transport, local government and the regions.
She also gave information about the Government's powers to do special inspections of Councils. Indeed, there is a Corporate Governance Inspection already underway for Rossendale Council.
She advised the Chartists to contact the audit commission about their concerns.
The next meeting of the Chartists will take place at 7pm on February 19 at the Youth and Community Centre, Burnley Road, Rawtenstall.
