MP David Chaytor is demanding action to reduce the risks posed by man-made chemicals.
He is supporting the Copenhagen Charter, which calls for all chemicals to be assessed to ensure their use is safe beyond reasonable doubt.
The Bury North MP says this will also mean a reduction in animal testing, as greater openness and sharing of information would cut the need for duplicate tests.
The charter is being backed by more than 100 consumer, environmental and animal welfare groups including Friends of the Earth and the RSPCA.
"We do not have enough information about the safety of chemicals that are in everyday use," said Mr Chaytor.
"It is important that the principles of this charter are supported by the Government. Consumers have the right to know which chemicals are in the products they buy and the right to know that these chemicals are safe."
