I LIVE in London, having grown up in Bury. However, I do return home regularly and read the Bury Times with interest.
Recently I have been amazed to read all the vitriol regarding the traffic on the road to Fairfield Hospital. These people should try living in London!
In London, access to all hospitals is extremely difficult and even sites for new hospitals are no better. These problems have been overcome by using skilled paramedic teams and "rapid response" doctors. Getting a patient to hospital as quickly as possible is important when lives are at risk, but it is much more immediately effective to get medical treatment to the patient at the scene.
Nobody in their right mind deliberately create obstacles and, yes, it would be ideal to have a dual carriageway right to the front door. But is that realistic? After all, the area around Heap Bridge is permanently congested anyway.
To me, it appears that a vociferous group in Bury are latching onto this issue just for the sake of criticism, without appreciating that they now have a wonderful new hospital, staffed by dedicated people whose sole aim is to preserve the good the health of the people of Bury.
