POLICE in Pendle have promised tough action against shops and off-licences caught selling alcohol to underage drinkers as part of a new crackdown on teenage tipplers.
The crackdown in Nelson and Brierfield has been launched in response to complaints from the public about juvenile nuisance and disorder -- much of which is fuelled by drink.
Two premises have already been caught out by the police, who are carrying out test purchases alongside Trading Standards.
Officers have warned that these and other shops found breaking the law will face hefty fines, as well as the prospect of being named and shamed and ultimately losing their licence.
Sergeant Karen Edwards said: "Alcohol is a key factor in incidents of juvenile nuisance, which is why we want to reduce its availability to youths.
"Posters are now going up in off-licences reminding youngsters that it is illegal to purchase alcohol under the age of 18 and reminding adults that it is illegal to buy alcohol on behalf of someone under the age of 18.
"In addition, we have begun a programme of test purchasing at local shops and off-licences and, unfortunately, two have already supplied alcohol and cigarettes to underage youths.
"We are determined to crack down on the teen drinkers and the misery they cause to local residents."
Anyone with information about off-licences which are breaking the law should contact the police on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
