SOLDIER Robert Jackson got involved in a skirmish of a different kind while attending a Christmas function at the Fernhurst Hotel, Ewood.

Blackburn magistrates heard that other guests took exception to Jackson and his friends turning up at the works do and it ended with punches being thrown by both sides.

Jackson, 25, of Argyle Street, Darwen, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour.

He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £40 costs. A charge of affray was discharged.

Neil White, prosecuting, said that towards the end of the evening Jackson and his friends had been asked to calm their behaviour and had initially complied.

"There was then a further argument which degenerated into a heated argument and eventually became a fight," said Mr White.

Stephen Parker, defending, said Jackson had been in the army for six years and had served in Northern Ireland and Bosnia. A corporal, he is currently stationed in Scotland training new recruits.

On the night of the incident he had been at home when someone rang and invited him to the party at the Fernhurst.

"It is fair to say there were other people there who made life difficult," said Mr Parker.

"Things did calm down but there was a group of females who were responsible for making sure it didn't end. My client accepts pushing someone but he did not throw any punches."

Mr Parker said the outcome of the court case would be reported to Jackson's unit and he would probably have to appear before the regimental sergeant major.
