RAMSBOTTOM'S four game losing streak came to an end with a battling performance over NWCL first division rivals Glossop.

Glossop, with former Bury striker Mark Carter in their line up, made a bright start.

With Ramsbottom's first attack Russell Brierley's header brought a save from Chris Nicholson.

At the midway point of the first half the heavy pitch was proving to be a major problem.

David Yorke-Robinson was not far away from a goal as he tried to bend the ball into the top corner. The visitors replied with Steve Pearson bringing a diving save from Horridge. Brierley then hit a first time shot that Nicholson did well to turn away for a corner kick.

Ramsbottom took the lead on 42 minutes when Brad Franks latched on to Woodford's through ball and scored with an excellent finish into the top corner.

At the break Ramsbottom looked to have done just about enough to deserve their slender lead.

In the opening minute of the second half Ramsbottom went two up, Danny Goodall played the ball through to Steve Orrell who crossed to the near post, Nicholson managed to keep out Yorke-Robinson's shot but Brierley pounced to head home the rebound.

Eight minutes later Horridge turned Pearson's free kick over the crossbar but from the corner kick Wayne Renshaw pulled a goal back.

After that early activity neither side created too many chances but on 73 minutes Nicholson made a brave save at the feet of the on rushing Orrell. Glossop almost grabbed an equaliser when the Ramsbottom defence failed to clear and Elliott Prest's shot was turned away by Horridge.

Two minutes into stoppage time Stephen Sheil headed off the line to keep United in front.
