A DRAMATC rescue involving the coastguard and lifeboat service saved 10 student rowers who were trapped on an island in the River Lune.
Eight women rowers and their male cox were plunged into the river at around 7.20am on Tuesday, February 19 when their boat was swept over the Skerton weir in Lancaster.
Four other members of Lancaster University Rowing Club, who were in a safety boat, attempted a rescue them. One of the men ended up stranded on the island while the other three had to wade to safety at the shore.
The rowers were eventually taken off the island on an inflatable inshore lifeboat around an hour later. All were suffering from mild hypothermia, but had no serius injuries and were taken t the Royal Lancaster Infirmary as a precaution.
Harry Roberts, senior helmsman on the lifeboat, said: "There was a lot of fresh water coming down the river and it was lucky that no-one was seriously hurt."
