A FASCINATING insight into bygone Bradley Fold can be gained through the publication of an old Ordnance Survey map.
The reprint of the 1908 map reproduces the 25 inch to one mile OS map for the settlement of Bradley Fold, with its pottery, textile machinery and printing works, paper mill and disused coal mines.
In addition, you can see Ainsworth Mills and the Liverpool, Bolton and Bury line of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway.
The scale of the map allows a remarkable amount of detail to be shown, not only roads, houses, farms, field boundaries, factories and mills, but also tramlines along Bury New Road, chimneys, old coal shafts and even the location of railway signal posts. It embraces all the interesting minutiae that is the lifeblood of history.
The map has been published by Consett-based Alan Godfrey Maps and includes a descriptive essay and part of the 1927 map of the same area for comparison.
