VOLUNTEER decorators today launched a special challenge and were planning to work through the day to give a local charity a face-lift.

Nightsafe, in Bridge Street, Blackburn, offers shelter for homeless youngsters.

But after more than a decade of looking after young people, the shelter was considered in desperate need of re-decorating.

Thanks to Blackburn Partnership, Graham and Brown in Davyfield Industrial Estate, Roman Road, took up the challenge of wallpapering the shelter's living room.

Paula Kaniuk, Nightsafe's project co-ordinator, said the team was grateful for the intervention.

"The shelter is always in need of repair because we are always so busy," she added.

Nightsafe has welcomed more than 4,000 residents aged 16 to 24 over the last decade and houses up to five residents a night for three-day stays.

Wendy Hobson who works at the Europrint Employee Community Involvement project at the Blackburn Partnership, had informed local businesses of charity projects in need of attention.

"I am so thrilled that the challenges were taken up and I am so pleased for the continued involvement and help from companies in Blackburn and Darwen."

The team of employees from Graham and Brown hope to test their new Straight Up product -- a wallpaper which sticks to pasted walls -- during the challenge.
