I READ with relish the results of Operation Hurricane (LET, February 12). No doubt this operation took some considerable time to execute and the excellent results were because of hard work and tenacity and involved considerable personal risk to the undercover officers.

Pity the judge let the side down.

Chief Inspector Steve Hartley, I feel, was diplomatic in his comments about the length of the sentences. For serious drug offences, the punishments of between one year and 3.5 years, not to mention a community service order, were an insult to the police officers involved. Does the judiciary not know of the damage caused to society by the drug pushers?

The Home Secretary recently threatened people stealing mobile phones and car-jacking with lengthy prison sentences. He's like the rest of this government -- all talk and no action.
