WORK will start next week on a scheme to transform a run down recreation area in Stacksteads into a modern playground.
The £49,000 scheme has been planned and designed by residents around Cutler Crescent, Stacksteads, including the children.
Youngsters and their parents attended a fun day on Saturday organised by Groundwork Rossendale and Youth Work.
The children made glass and copper artwork which will be included in glass blocks to form the centre piece of the new play area.
Christina Leigh, whose son Matthew, ten, created a tiger, said: "The residents welcome the scheme. The children up here really need it there is nothing else for them to do. It is good that something is being provided for them."
The funding has been provided by the Barclay Sitesavers scheme, Lancashire environment fund, government regeneration money and Rossendale Council.
Martin Proffit, senior project officer with Groundwork Rossendale, said: "Throughout the process local residents have been actively involved in the design of the new play area.
"With their help the site will be transformed into a 21st century play area."
Residents were shown modern equipment and chose a turbo-slide, double gyro and speed gyro roundabout as well as a toddler climbing frame all with safety surfaces.
As youngsters play ball games on the park trees are being provided to stop balls going into gardens of houses which surround the area.
Drainage work will also be carried out especially at the worst affected part near the entrance.
Saturday's fun day was to celebrate the funding success. Work is due to be completed by the end of March when another celebration is being planned possibly including a circus skills event.
