IAN Lawson's injury jinx has struck again and the Bury forward could be out of action for two or three weeks writes Phil Thorp
Last Saturday's goal hero injured his ankle during the crucial victory over AFC Bournemouth and that leaves a striking vacancy for tonight's clash against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
The news is a massive blow for Shakers boss Andy Preece who has just managed to get the former Huddersfield Town and Stockport County man fit after a knee problem.
"It's a nightmare situation for Ian, especially with him getting back on the scoring trail and playing two ninety minute games recently.
"It's the last thing we wanted but it's just the way it's being going for us this season.
"Players begin to hit form then the next thing you know they are out injured."
The news of Lawson's absence has been tempered with the news that Gareth Seddon's hamstring strain has eased up sufficiently for him to be considered for tonight's match.
The likelihood is the former RAF ace will return to partner Jon Newby in the Potteries where Preece expects no favours.
"Stoke are going well in our division yet they are getting criticism in certain quarters because they aren't in the top two.
"But considering they have had to sell a few of their top players they are doing okay.
"They are a compact side and aren't easy to break down but we have the confidence of a big win behind us.
"We didn't do too badly at Cardiff last week and they are a tough team to play at home, so we must try and repeat that sort of form.
"We are looking better in front of goal than of late and are creating a lot more. If we continue doing that there's no reason why we can't come back with a good result."
There's better news from physio Alan Raw's treatment table with midfielder Chris Billy and central defender Danny Swailes both likely to be fit some time next week.
One or other could be available for selection for next Tuesday's home match against Oldham or the following Saturday's crucial relegation battle against Notts County.
Shakers' joint chairman John Smith has reported no further contact with any of the parties believed to be interested in taking over the club.
But he was thrilled with the level of support, vocal and financial, at Saturday's game and thanked former boss Stan Ternent for offering to bring a Burnley side to Gigg Lane for a close season fundraising match.
"We were delighted at the magnificent response we received from the fans on Saturday," said Mr Smith.
"And the gesture from the fan who donated £200 of his Golden Gamble winnings was terrific.
"It was also brilliant of Stan Ternent to offer to bring his team down for a game.
"Everyone is rallying to the cause but we still need a big injection of cash."
