Blackburn Rovers have put plans for a Worthington Cup celebration on hold -- so they can concentrate on staying in the Premiership.

Club officials had said Graeme Souness and the team would show off the trophy to fans in an official homecoming following the 2-1 victory over Spurs.

And Blackburn with Darwen Council is hoping to hold a civic reception or a similar event to say "well done" to the players who captivated 30,000 Rovers fans at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and tens of thousands more back home.

But Rovers are in the Premiership relegation zone and are due to play fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.

Today John Williams, chief executive of Blackburn Rovers, said: "Of course we are very proud of what we've achieved and want to show off the trophy. Rest assured we will be doing so, probably at Ewood Park.

"However, we have a very vital time coming up in relation to our league position. So we are putting any celebrations in the locker with a view to bringing them out when it is more appropriate."

Pauline Perkins, secretary of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters' Association (BRSA), said: "I entirely agree with that. I think that it would be inappropriate to be celebrating.

"We need to concentrate on the league position. It's no good winning the cup and being relegated. As soon as we they are safe they can have a double celebration.

"Everybody had a big celebration on Sunday at the ground with the cup anyway."

But Tony Carter, a member of BRSA, said fans could miss out on the chance to celebrate if Rovers go down.

"I think they should do something reasonably quickly," he said.
