CONFUSION over lanes ended with the car being driven by Zafar Zahid Shah overturning several times before coming to rest on its wheels on the McDonald's slip road of the Whitebirk roundabout near Blackburn.

And after being taken to hospital ,the 24-year-old shop worker was later charged with a driving offence committed on what his solicitor, John Dewhurst, described as a "notorious" roundabout.

Shah, of Queen's Road, Blackburn, admitted driving without due care and attention.

He was fined £250 with £35 costs and his licence endorsed with five penalty points.

Six penalty points could have resulted in him being banned under the totting up procedure.

David Macro, prosecuting, said another motorist was travelling around the roundabout when the Volvo cut across him to turn down the McDonald's slip road.

The cars collided and the Volvo was sent somersaulting down the road before landing back on all four wheels.

Shah was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone.

Mr Dewhurst said it was a terrible roundabout which was notorious among motorists.

He said Shah had joined the roundabout from Whitebirk Drive and was intending to turn down the slip road to the Red Lion.

The other car had joined from the M65 and was heading towards Preston.

"The other car was in the outside lane and my client assumed he would turn left towards the Red Lion as well," said Mr Dewhurst.

"Instead he carried straight on and there was a collision."
