A LYTHAM sixth former is on a learning curve in politics after being elected to the UK Youth Parliament.

Georgia Barker, 17, of Lytham St Annes High Technology College was recently named the Fylde's representative in the national parliament for young people.

Georgia said: "The parliament is a bit like the House of Lords. It debates and passes resolutions on education and other issues. I am still learning all about it."

But Georgia, who wants to study social anthropology, is no stranger to tackling community issues.

While working towards her Duke of Edinburgh bronze award five years ago she set up St Annes Youth Action Group to help improve facilities for young people and has worked with the group ever since.

And she got involved with the youth parliament after visiting the National Youth Conference at Warwick University last September with fellow students.

She said: "I have always been interested in politics and world issues. I think young people should have a voice in politics and they should know how it works and that you can actually change things."

And Georgia's achievements have impressed Fylde MP Michael Jack, who visited the Worsley Road school recently.

"I had a meeting with Michael Jack and Mr Wood my head teacher and we were considering me doing some work experience this July," Georgia said.

But despite the promise of time at Westminster, she is not planning to go directly into politics. "I am looking to do social anthropology," she said.
