TRADERS in central Morecambe fear the approval of a factory shopping centre at Frontierland could spell the death knell for smaller shops.
Morecambe Chamber of Trade opposed Morrison's plans to turn the Frontierland site into a multi-million pound leisure and shopping development but the scheme was given the go ahead by the Secretary of State last week.
They says it is an out-of-town shopping centre but, following an inquiry, the planning inspector decided it was "suitable" and would not adversely affect other retail areas.
"We're obviously disappointed that the Secretary of State chose to ignore his own policy guidelines," said the Chamber's John Bates.
"It's our opinion that this is an out-of-town development that will divert a big percentage of our passing pedestrian trade.
We objected to the plans but they've been given the go-ahead so now we have to be positive.
I hope I'm proved wrong about this and that it does bring new people into Morecambe."
Morrison's proposed factory outlet includes 56 retail units with a food court and a landscaped garden area.
The Polo Tower will be retained and refurbished.
They estimate that it will attract up to £1 million people in its first year.
The news was greeted with enthusiasm by city councillors.
Cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration, Carolyn Simpson said: "This will enhance the image of Morecambe as a tourist destination.
The ramifications of this development could be enormous.
Importantly, it will also create jobs.
It is estimated that 150 direct jobs will be created with a possible 150 indirectly created through suppliers and contractors."
Cllr Keith Budden: "Undoubtedly, this project will enhance the appearance of the promenade and compliment the extensive investment undertaken by the council in improving the quality and appearance of the promenade under the Tern project.
It has taken a long time to get to this stage but we now hope it will progress quickly and become a catalyst for future investment.
"This and the current interest in renovating and extending the Midland Hotel are positive signs in Morecambe's regeneration."
Property Director at Morrison's Supermarket's Roger Owen said: "We are delighted at the news and are now looking forward to getting detailed plans together and working up the construction programme."
