A MOTHER-of-three whose death sparked a manslaughter inquiry, died as a result of her alcoholism.

An inquest in Bury was told on Tuesday (Feb 26) how detectives arrested Susan Treloar's boyfriend, Martin Rowlands, after he admitted giving her temazepam tablets to help her sleep. Hours later, she was found dead.

Mr Rowlands was taken to Whitefield Police Station, where he was interviewed under caution on suspicion of manslaughter.

But, a post mortem, together with toxicology tests, showed that the 41-year-old divorcee died from an infection caused by prolonged alcohol abuse.

Mrs Treloar was discovered dead in bed at her flat in Dumers Lane, Radcliffe, on September 8.

Despite medical advice and encouragement from her estranged husband and their three daughters for Mrs Treloar to give up drinking, the former barmaid continued with her addiction. The night before she died, Mrs Treloar asked Mr Rowlands for a temazepam tablet.

When he left her flat, she was asleep in bed. He found her dead the following morning.

Recording a verdict of death by natural causes, Bury coroner Mr Barrie Williams said the quantity of temazepam and alcohol in Mrs Treloar's body after her death was unconnected to the tragedy.

He said: "The explanation for Mrs Treloar's death ultimately came as a result of the pathology and toxicology examinations."

Mr Williams said it was her prolonged dependency on alcohol which made her susceptible to infection.

The inquest also heard how Mr Rowlands was released without charge over Mrs Treloar's death, but was cautioned for supplying prescribed drugs to her.
