FREEMASONS in Bury and Radcliffe are adopting a higher public profile to sweep away their perceived images of secrecy and "funny handshakes".

And they will be holding an open day later this year to help raise awareness of the organisation which each year raises millions of pounds for Masonic and outside causes.

Now, for the first time in its long history, the Freemasons are advertising for new recruits.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master for Bury and Radcliffe is Walshaw man Andrew Sykes.

He explained: "We very much want to attract people from all over the community.

"We have 13 Masonic lodges in Bury and a further seven in Radcliffe. Local membership is between 500 and 600.

"What we want to do is to get rid of the misconceptions surrounding the Freemasons. People believe we are a secret organisation and that those who join get some sort of business benefits."

He stressed the Masons offered conviviality, friendship and companionship to those who joined as well as an opportunity to get involved in numerous social and fund-raising activities.

"On average during the last few years, the Freemasons in England and Wales have raised £3 million for Masonic causes and £3 million for outside charities," disclosed Mr Sykes.

The lodges in Bury and Radcliffe now have their own press officer, Mr Mike Gibbons, who will play a critical role in helping the Freemasons raise their public profile.

Mr Sykes explained that the secrecy image of the organisation may have been due to the fact the Masons closed ranks when they were persecuted by the Nazis.

And on the strange handshakes, he said: "We do have forms of recognition between members."

Now, the Masons are anxious for local people to become involved.

They should be over 21 with no significant criminal convictions. All religious faiths are welcome. As a Mason, they will share a strong bond with fellow members.

As for claims that Masons can mutually benefit their businesses, the rules clearly state a Freemason must not use his membership to promote his own or anyone else's business.

Now, local people are being invited to attend a "Freemasonry in the Community" open day at the Bury lodge in Parsons Lane and its sister lodge in Bury and Bolton Road, Breightmet, on June 23. Times will be given later.
