ELDERLY people in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale, have been warned to be cautious of 'cold calls' from security companies.

Relatives of a dozen elderly people have contacted Pennine police headquarters at Burnley in the last few days about security companies making unsolicited calls to arrange visits by their sales staff.

It is also alleged they have also made false claims that their companies are recommended by the police.

Pennine division crime prevention officer said they were keen to point out that there were many reputable security companies, but stressed that the police do not recommend any particular one.

She added: "I would advise people not to be pushed into accepting a visit from a salesperson that they themselves have not requested.

"If they do want to review their security then I would urge them to contact a local company and arrange for someone else to be present with them when they call.

"Finally if someone does call at your house and you are unsure about them then please do not let them in."

PC Atkinson said this week complaints came from people in Burnley, Nelson and Rawtenstall areas.

They mostly involved relatives concerned that elderly members of their family had been approached by people suggesting a time and date on which they could be visited to carry out a review of their security.

It was difficult to say whether the elderly are being specifically targeted, as many more calls may have been made and not reported.

She said: "This is really a warning for people to be on their guard. We have been made aware of one company name but there may be others.

"The particular company named does exist. It is a legitimate company which certainly does not claim on its literature that it is recommended by police. It could be down to individual salesmen."
