EAST Lancashire's Pop Idol fans will help make music history this weekend after buying winner Will Young's record-breaking debut single.
The double A side, Anything is Possible/Evergreen, is set to to become the fastest selling single of all time with unprecedented sales across East Lancashire.
The record is expected to have sold one million copies this week and be named number one tomorrow.
Louise Omerod, manager at Our Price, Arndale Centre, Accrington, said that more than 500 copies have shot off the shelves in the first week.
"I have most definitely not seen anything like this in 15 years. Every other customer is buying it. BMG must be laughing all the way to the bank."
Kevin Thompson, manager at Townsend Records in Clitheroe, noticed an increase of sales on the back of the Brit Awards but was also out of stock for two days because demand was unprecedented.
"It is with out a doubt the best selling CD single of all time in our store. We have sold about 50 copies this week which is the maximum total we have ever had in one week."
And Paul Nuttall, manager at Reidy's in Penny Street, Blackburn, who have sold around 400 copies this week said: "We all wish him great success. We even had one lady who bought five copies!
Experts in the industry are not surprised by the record breaking sales figures because 15 million people watched the television competition.
