NOISY cockerels have been silenced after a householder complained to the environmental health department of Rossendale Council.

The council ordered two of the cockerels from Whitaker Park in Rawtenstall to be relocated to Stubbylee Park in Bacup after receiving a diary of complaints from a resident who lives nearby.

Council workers have also been ordered to put the remaining four birds inside on a night so residents can't hear them crow.

Coun June Forshaw, chairman of Whitaker Park Action Group, said: "I have now received a letter from the environmental health department explaining how the problem has been resolved.

"The cockerels have now been shut in at night and the complainants have been contacted and they reported it was not as bad as it used to be.

"I am inviting people living near to the park to become a member of the Friends of Whitaker Park and get involved."

The Friends of Whitaker Park group are planning a music in the park day on June 2 as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. Bands will play in the park and there will be other attractions and entertainers.

Coun Forshaw, chairman of the group, is working with pupils of Alder Grange High School in Rawtenstall to turn CDs into gold coloured wall clocks especially for the jubilee.
