ROVERS defender Henning Berg today apologised for his defensive slip in Saturday's relegation scrap with Bolton at the Reebok.

Berg gifted Wanderers the opening goal when he made a hash of an attempted backpass on the stroke of half-time.

But Graeme Souness's 10-men then launched a brilliant second half fightback to get the Norwegian off the hook as both sides shared the spoils.

"I hold my hand up, I made a mistake and it cost us a goal," confessed Berg.

"But it was one of those things. Sometimes you make a mistake and don't get punished but we did here.

"So I wasn't happy with that, but over the course of a season you will make mistakes, and as a defender that's the way it is. If you make a mistake then it usually costs you a goal.

"When you're a striker, you don't get that highlighted quite so much.

"I was waiting for the ball to come down so that I could pass it back to Brad but it was just a bad kick.

"So I can't make too many excuses for that because I should have done better.

"But we battled back and it ended up being a good point for us in the end after going down to 10-men.

"We had Andy sent off early on and then gave away a bad goal.

"But we came back strongly after the break and could have ended up winning it in the end.

"So all in all, with the late chances we had, we were the team who were looking for the win so it was a good performance by the team."

Nevertheless, despite his satisfaction at the way Rovers battled back, Berg was desperately disappointed at referee Paul Durkin's decision to send Andy Cole off for stamping on Mike Whitlow.

"It's a derby game and Whitlow caught Andy around the back of his heels with a bad tackle and Andy got frustrated," said Berg.

"But in a derby game you shouldn't send people off like that, you should have a word with both of them and ask them to calm down and let players get on with it.

"In such a big game like this you don't want it to be decided by people getting sent off or yellow carded.

"So we weren't happy about that."
