ROVERS' Academy strikerJemal Johnson floored Bolton with a deadly double-whammy as Rob Kelly's Under 17s roared to a 3-1 win over their arch-rivals at the weekend.

Johnson capped a brilliant second half performance with two super strikes to give Rovers maximum points.

But it also took some heroics from keeper Steve Drench who saved a second half penalty to ensure the visitors secured maximum points.

"I know it sounds corny but it really was a game of two halves," said Kelly.

"In the first half we were disappointing and never really got going.

"But we then made a few changes at half-time and we looked a completely different side after the break."

Jerome Watt set the ball rolling when he started and finished a sweeping move.

And Johnson then made it 2-0 when he cooly finished off another slick counter attack.

Wanderers then pulled one back from the penalty spot and the referee pointed to the spot again minutes later.

But Drench was more than equal to the challenge, saving brilliantly to keep Rovers' noses in front.

It was then left to Johnson to complete a memorable victory when he scored with an acrobatic overhead kick in the closing stages.

But Kelly was delighted in particular with the performances of some of his younger players, most notably Luke Jones and Joel Byron.

"At one point we had five schoolboys on the pitch and two of those lads were both Under 15 players but they coped with it very, very well," said Kelly.

Ian Miller's Under 19s also gained a hard-fought point to ensure Rovers remained unbeaten against Wanderers over the course of the whole weekend.

"That was very much like the first team game," said Kelly.

"It was very hard fought but we probably had the better of the chances without quite having the cutting edge to win the game."
