BLACKBURN ROVERS chief executive John Williams today defended his players against misconduct allegations -- which include a claim that midfielder Tugay assaulted a steward.
Greater Manchester Police are continuing to make inquiries into the alleged assault which was said to have taken place in the players' tunnel at the Reebok Stadium following Rovers' ill-tempered relegation clash with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
Police said there were a "series of incidents" during and after the match, which saw Worthington Cup hero Andy Cole sent off for stamping on Bolton defender Mike Whitlow.
The name of the player involved has not been released although it has been confirmed it was not the former Manchester United striker.
But today Williams, who has spoken to the players, said the allegations were unfounded.
He said: "We have had discussions with Greater Manchester Police and Bolton Wanderers, and I am expecting further discussions with Bolton later this week.
"But on the evidence we have there appears to be no foundation in the allegations against any of our players."
The match, which ended 1-1, was full of incidents on and off the pitch.
Andy Cole had to be restrained by club doctor Phil Batty after he tried to confront Mike Whitlow at half-time.
A spokesman for Bolton Wanderers said the matter was in the hands of the police.
