A MAN was seen throwing down a large kitchen knife as police arrived outside a Blackburn pub.

And Blackburn magistrates heard it was the second knife the unemployed chef had gone to get from his home after an argument in the Centurion pub, in Fishmoor Drive, over a pint of beer.

Connor Doyle, 19, of Fishmoor Drive, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed instrument in a public place. He was remanded on bail until April 13 after the magistrates ordered the preparation pre-sentence reports.

Wendy Chappell, prosecuting, said the police arrived at about 1.10am and saw Doyle walking away from the pub carrying something which he then threw to the ground.

Doyle admitted carrying the knife which he said he had intended to use the knife to frighten some people in the pub. He said he didn't know the people but there had been an argument about someone spilling his beer.

Doyle also admitted that he had already been home once and got a knife but said his cousin had taken that off him.

Roger Pickles, defending, said Doyle had been completely honest with the police.

"He says he had consumed a lot of alcohol and taken medication for depression and the combination of the two led to him committing this stupid offence," said Mr Pickles.

"It would seem the group inside realised he was drunk and decided to have some fun at his expense.

"As he told the police, the knife was to frighten them and nothing else. When he got to the pub on the second occasion he realised how stupid he was being and was walking away when the police saw him."
