FORMER Stanley player Brian Welch came back to haunt his former club scoring the winner for second placed Lancaster in the UniBond Premier Division clash at the Giant Axe.
The one time Burnley player, who spent five seasons with Stanley before moving into the NWCL Division One with Clitheroe, got the vital goal in the 70th minute, slotting the ball home to secure Lancaster a crucial three points as they try to keep the pressure on league leaders Burton Albion.
For Stanley is was their sixth league encounter without a win and they will be hoping for better things from the cup at the weekend when they take on First Division side Trafford in the UniBond League Cup semi-final at the Crown Ground.
One plus point for Stanley was the introduction of new signing Lee Buggie.
The former Bury man, who was a member of the same Shakers successful youth side as recent signing Steve Halford, impressed for the Reds reserves at the weekend scoring five goals in their 9-2 victory over Bamber Bridge.
Buggie hadn't been able to break into the Bury first team and went on loan to Third Division Rochdale earlier this season before coming to the Crown Ground for a trial this weekend.
He wasn't able to crown his Reds debut with a goal but got on in the 79th minute as boss John Coleman tried to change things around.
Coleman took off Gary Williams but Stanley could not find a way past the well-marshalled Lancaster defence.
