IN reply to the comments of John Farrer on the state of the playing fields throughout Hyndburn (Letters, February 20), in 1989/1990 the then Conservative government privatised the running of parks and playing fields.

This resulted in all groundsmen in the borough being removed from every playing field under the client contract. I know, as I was one of them.

In 1999, when the Conservatives took control of Hyndburn Council, the leader, Peter Britcliffe, promised more money for parks and playing fields but, to date, he has failed to make good on his election promise.

As things stand the morale of the workforce is at an all-time low. So if we are apportioning blame for the state of our playing fields, we should not blame staff, but the politicians who promised to sort things out, but haven't.
