I FULLY support your stance on the inclusion of the old Lancashire and Yorkshire clocks within the modernised railway station at Blackburn (LET, February 13). However, other issues regarding the new station need highlighting.
The old roof was deemed unsafe and was demolished, to be replaced by the new dome, which in comparison to the old roof is of little value to the traveller and appears to be nothing more than an architectural whim.
Certainly, from an engineering point of view, the old roof was of a far superior design and was constructed with a lot more pride and attention to detail than the current edifice.
I recently noted eight roof leaks on platform one alone. On the same day I noted six different points of water ingress in the refurbished subway, rendering the new tiled floor hazardous.
The original roof covered the whole of the station including the tracks. The new dome covers parts of two platforms only. The rainwater permeates through the track ballast and into the subway. Why was waterproofing not carried out before the subway renovation? Surely, this problem was foreseeable.
Under the old roof, passengers could board trains without getting wet. The design of the new station roof is such that passengers do get wet.
The new roof does not protrude far enough out over the running track and has no awning edge protection, a feature synonymous with railway stations in the past. The lack allows water to blow under the roof and across the platforms.
The decision to demolish a section of the outer station wall to open up the Boulevard vista is understandable, but, unfortunately, the wind tunnel that has resulted sends howling winds across the platforms. Perhaps a Perspex or glass screen would alleviate the problems.
