TOWN hall measures to boost the borough's "green" credentials are going on the road.
Two Bury Council vehicles have been converted to run on 80 per cent diesel and 20 per cent liquid propane gas (LPG).
Supporters of LPG say that it gives up to 18 per cent better fuel economy and 30 per cent more power and torque.
It gives out fewer emissions and cuts down on the harmful effects associated with diesel and similar motor fuels.
The council will decide, after a three-month trial, whether to convert other vehicles in its fleet onto LPG.
Councillor Julie Higson, executive member for environment and transport, said: "Great claims are being made for LPG and it would have been remiss of us not to run our own trial and find out for ourselves.
"We are committed to using and encouraging "green" alternatives and helping to improve the environment whenever we can."
