RESIDENTS in Nelson have less than four weeks left to have their say on proposals for a new community building in the Whitefield ward.
A public consultation was put in place at the beginning of the year after Pendle Council and Pendle Partnership announced proposals to build a new community centre at the corner of Stanley Street and Albert Street.
The single storey building, measuring more than 1400 square metres, would include a main hall, young people's area, kitchen, toilets, caf, offices for welfare organisations, interview and meeting rooms, changing
rooms, a reception and office. There would also be two car parks and a secure play area for a creche.
It would be used for a range of events including weddings and social events, small meetings, as an advice point and exhibition area. It is likely to replace Nelson Civic Theatre, which could be demolished, and the Silverman Hall, which would be used for other activities.
Residents of Nelson are being asked for their views on the proposal, including what functions they would like to see.
Flyers containing a summary of the proposals in English and Urdu are available from public buildings in Nelson such as the town hall, Elliot House and the library, as well as the Asian welfare organisations.
John Kirk, executive director (services), said: "There's been quite a lot of interest in what is going to be inside the centre.
"Some people have asked if it could be bigger and I don't think they realise how big the building will actually be. It will be bigger than the Silverman Hall and the Civic Theatre put together. There's also been some concern about what will happen to the Silverman Hall but no concern about the theatre."
Views can still be sent to John Kirk, Executive Director (Services), Pendle Council, Town Hall, Market Street, Nelson, BB9 7LG or by e-mail on john.kirk@pendle.gov.uk by Friday, March 29.
