TWO men called police from the top of a motorway bridge today and said -- We're going to jump.
A major operation was launched after the call was received at 6am from the bridge above the M65.
Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the scene at Junction 12 at Brierfield near to the B&Q store and the Lomeshaye industrial estate.
It is not known why they were threatening to jump.
Insp John Clucas said: "The two men were sat on the wrong side of the bridge over the river rather than the motorway.
"One of our officers spoke to them in an attempt to keep them and a specialist negotiator was sent for.
"Fire and Rescue Services and ambulance were on stand-by and discussing how to deal with the situation if the men finished up in the water.
"We also had police ready to close the motorway if that should become necessary."
The negotiator was still about ten minutes away from the scene when the men agreed to climb off the bridge
Insp Clucas said: "The two men were arrested for conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
"Both have connections with the Brierfield area."
