TEN thousand Lancaster families did a double take when they cast their eyes on their morning pinta this week.
On Saturday morning milkmen in the city become the first in the country to deliver glass bottles covered in shrink-wrapped plastic sleeves.
Dairy company Arla Foods, which has a fresh milk plant in Bamber Bridge, is behind the trial -- a first for the milk industry.
And to celebrate the breakthrough, 1,000 of the sleeves will contain £5 doorstep vouchers.
Customers simply have to peel off the sleeves to see if they've won and they have a one-in-ten chance of winning.
Arla Foods doorstep development manager Shuna McDonald said: "Putting shrink-wrap sleeves on bottles presents a number of hurdles and this is the first time it has ever been done in the milk industry.
But it opens up numerous possibilities, not just around competitions but product information and even advertising.
"Milkmen continue to do a great job and the use of shrink-wrap sleeves may offer us a valuable opportunity to add value to their service.
We will be looking closely at all aspects of the trial to look at the best way of taking it forward."
