A WHEELCHAIR basketball player has slam-dunked a chance to participate in this summer's Commonwealth Games.
Nicola Frost (14), a pupil at Coney Green High School, Radcliffe, has been selected for the Queen's Jubilee Baton Relay.
Nicola, of Toon Crescent, Brandlesholme, Bury, will be carrying the baton 500 yards through Charlestown on Wednesday, July 24, on day 49 of its 50-day hand-to-hand journey across the country.
She is a member of the Jigsaw Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball Club, which meets every Tuesday at the Castle Leisure Centre, Bury, where they are coached by Josie Cichockyj, a former Great Britain player. Nicola has been an active member since October.
As well as playing in the team, she is also an active committee member and, along with her school friends, helps run the club.
Yvonne Hall, Bury's disability sport's co-ordinator, said: "Nicola has a great sporting potential. Her family and friends are behind her all the way and she is always willing to help with club activities."
The baton relay will be started by the Queen on March 11, passing it on to Sir Roger Bannister in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace at the outset of its 58,800-mile trip. It will finish at the Opening Ceremony on July 25, again in front of the Queen.
