I HAVE lived in Blackpool for over 60 years and have heard of many daft schemes but the one to demolish the Talbot Road bus station takes the cake.
Whoever thought of that one needs the sack. How can anyone think it is a good idea to have people waiting in the streets or in shop doorways perhaps in the cold weather, or even the dark, as we all know that streets in any town are not safe after dark.
Blackpool town centre is too small to have buses going round to pick up people from the streets. Surely this would cause traffic congestion and also help to create more pollution from the exhaust fumes.
In my opinion the best way would be to renovate the bus station, even to its pre-war standard.
It was a nice looking building, built in cream and green tiles with big picture tiles showing different types of transport. They are probably still there today under the facia boards. It was open plan, a bit draughty perhaps, but so are the streets. They could build a modern heated waiting room with decent seating, large windows so one could see when their bus was arriving.
This could incorporate an office for an inspector to give out information, a snack bar and there could even be a police presence with an office that they could patrol the streets from. This would be a safe area instead of people waiting at street corners for a bus which could be late due to traffic congestion.
They would make their way to the bus station where a bus may even be waiting for them. People arriving by train could just walk across the road knowing full well they could reach any part of Blackpool from the bus station. Another advantage with the bus station is it has four floors above for car parking which is certainly needed in Blackpool.
Some of the anti-casino groups in Blackpool claim that the council have a hidden agenda. Well I am beginning to believe it after reading what they intend doing with our bus station.
