A HOGHTON landlord has been ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4,000 after being found guilty of a catalogue of food hygiene offences.

Appearing before magistrates in Leyland, Austin John Ball of the Boatyard Inn at Hoghton, pleaded guilty to seven matters brought under food hygiene regulations.

The court was told how environmental services inspectors from Chorley Borough Council, visited the premises in August 2001 as part of a routine inspection, and found that the standards of cleanliness and structural repair fell well below the legal requirements.

In reference to the successful prosecution, Chorley Borough Council's principal environmental health officer, Simon Clark said: "The fines imposed by the court reflect the severity of the offences committed at the Boatyard Inn.

"To his credit, Mr Ball implemented an in-depth cleaning and maintenance programme following our initial visit and to date good standards of cleanliness have been maintained."
