POLICE have revealed they are no longer treating an assault in Nelson on a 14-year-old Asian boy as a racist incident.

It was originally claimed that the teenager had been assaulted by three white males in Railway Street at 8.30pm on Wednesday.

But it has since been revealed that the three attackers were Asian youths aged between 14 and 16.

He was approached from behind by the group who assaulted him as he walked home along Railway Street.

Police said he wasn't badly injured as he did manage to struggle free but was shaken by the incident.

A police spokesman said: "It was described as a racist incident because the information we had then was that this Asian boy was attacked by three white males. The information we now have is that he was not attacked by whites but Asian males."

The boy's family have asked for him not to be identified. Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact police on 01282 472634.
