FORTY residents of the hamlet of Hurstwood near Burnley attended a public meeting to discuss plans for the development of the former water works pump house.
United Utilities have told the Worsthorne and Hurstwood Parish Council that they are considering applying for planning permission to develop the large unused building into four properties.
Parish council chairman, Tony Lambert, said: "The village is a conservation area and there is concern about any proposed development.
"Residents are concerned that any proposed development does not spoil the area. The number who turned out indicate their concern."
He added: "We are now planning another meeting with representatives of United Utilities and Burnley planning office for more information."
Coun Lambert added: "United Utilities have not yet subitted a planning application but have gone about things in the proper way by telling what they are thinking of doing.
"The building has been unused now for several years. If it is restricted to four properties with possibly eight more vehicles that may be acceptable to the local people or not I can't say but there is a mixed reception to the suggestions."
