RECEPTION class pupils at a Darwen school are being given a little help from their friends when it comes to getting used to school life.
Teacher Nicola Monaghan has helped set up a 'Buddy Scheme' at Darwen County Primary School to assist the new infants during play times.
Both staff and Year 2 'buddies' wear "I'm here to help" badges, supplied by Blackburn's Asda store, in the playground so the youngsters know where to go if they need a hand fastening their coat or tying their shoelaces.
The scheme, which has been set up in conjunction with Blackburn with Darwen Council, has already proved beneficial for all the infants involved.
Teacher Gail Haworth said: "We have been running the scheme for a while now and its seems to be going very well.
"It has helped to boost the confidence of the reception class infants who will now go up to the older 'buddies' and ask for help. I think it is easier for them to approach an older child than an adult."
She added: "The Year 2 buddies also seem to be benefiting as it gives them responsibility, especially if they are a little shy."
It is hoped the scheme will become a permanent feature of playtimes at the school. 'Buddies' will also be in operation at lunchtimes when welfare staff take over.
